Coasts and marine environment

The Spanish coastline is approximately 7,880 km long. A large sector of Spain’s population and its model for economic development is inextricably linked to the coast. Furthermore, the Spanish coastal environment boasts a wealth of natural heritage and biodiversity, and climate change therefore exerts pressure on the integrity and future of the country’s coastal territory.  
 
The rise in the average sea level as a result of climate change, alterations to wind, current and swell patterns, together with occasional changes in the frequency and intensity of storms are the major climate change drivers that have impacted on coastal areas, which in Spain are highly vulnerable.  It is therefore necessary to assess in-depth current and potential impacts forecast for climate variables in order to adjust or adapt actions carried out in coastal areas.
